Trapezoidal Screw Drive - GROB Drive Technology GmbH

Contents

1. What is a Screw Drive?

A Screw Drive is a mechanical system used to convert rotary motion into linear motion or vice versa. It typically consists of a threaded spindle and a nut, with the nut sitting on the spindle and moving along the thread. Depending on the type of Screw Drive, different types of threads can be used, including Trapezoidal Screws and Ball Screws.

2. Trapezoidal Thread vs. Ball Screw

Trapezoidal Screw Drive

  1. A Trapezoidal Screw Spindle features a thread with a trapezoidal profile. The trapezoidal thread has a flank angle of 30°, allowing it to transmit both compressive and tensile forces equally. It's manufactured according to the principles of DIN 103. Due to the principle of sliding friction, Standard Trapezoidal Threads exhibit self-locking properties (condition: friction angle of 6° and lead angle <4.5°).

  1. Trapezoidal Screw Spindles are often used in applications where load-bearing capacity is more important than speed. They are more cost-effective than Ball Screws and are commonly used in machine tools, presses, and lifting platforms.

Ball Screw Drive

  1. In contrast, a Ball Screw Spindle features a thread specifically designed for ball usage. This means that small balls are placed between the spindle and the nut, which carry the load and make the movement more efficient and less frictional. The tribological basis shifts from sliding friction (trapezoidal screw) to rolling friction, resulting in the loss of self-locking properties.

  1. Ball Screw Spindles offer high precision, low friction, and the ability to achieve high speeds and accelerations. They are ideal for applications where fast and accurate linear movement is required, such as in CNC machines, robots, and other high-performance applications.

3. What's the main difference between these two Threads?

The main difference between Trapezoidal Screw Spindles and Ball Screw Spindles lies in their precision, efficiency, and ability to achieve high speeds. Trapezoidal Screw Spindles are more robust and cost-effective, while Ball Screw Spindles offer better performance with high precision but are also more expensive. The choice depends on the specific requirements of your application.

4. When is a Trapezoidal Screw Spindle the right choice for me?

Trapezoidal Screws are suitable when a stroke speed of <=50 mm/s is sufficient, when a duty cycle of <=50% is adequate, and when self-locking is a safety-relevant feature of the drive. For standard applications with low speeds and high loads, Trapezoidal Screws are appealing due to their low initial investment cost.

5. When is a Ball Screw Spindle the right choice for me?

Ball Screw Spindles lose much less energy in the system due to rolling friction, making them suitable for speeds >=50 mm/s and duty cycles up to 100%. Additionally, Ball Screws are used in applications that demand high precision.

6. What dangers do Spindles in an electromechanical drive face?

The primary danger is side forces. Regardless of whether it's a Trapezoidal Screw Spindle or a Ball Screw Spindle, the longer the spindle, the greater and more dangerous the side forces become. Why do side forces occur? Here are three possible causes:

  1. The installation of the Screw Jack isn't free of stress.
  2. The lifting elements aren't articulated.
  3. The load isn't guided with sufficient accuracy.

All of this leads to high side forces, which should always be avoided. Why? Because side forces shorten the lifespan and, in the worst case, can even lead to failure.

A universal joint allows compensation in two axes

7. Side forces in Screw Jacks: How to avoid them

Why are side forces and stress dangerous? Because they lead to increased wear and thus reduce the lifespan. Here are 3 tips on how to avoid side forces and stress in Screw Jacks:

7.1 First: Use bearing joints – allows for continuous compensation

There are various options for joint bearings, including joint heads, cardan plates, cardan adapters, and ball joints. The choice of additional element depends on the direction of compensation needed. A universal joint, for example, allows compensation in 2 axes.

7.2 Second: Follow the golden rule in mechanical engineering: never use 2 fixed bearings in one system

Over-determination in a system always leads to stress. Therefore, plan for at most one fixed bearing and one floating bearing in the system.

7.3 Third: As little play as possible, as much as necessary

In steel construction, it's often challenging to meet the tight tolerance requirements of mechanical engineering. Therefore, incorporate compensation options into your connection design. This allows assemblers to adjust for excessive tolerances.

FAQs about Screw Drives

A screw drive is a mechanical device that converts rotational motion into linear motion. It consists of a spindle and a nut with matching threads.

Screw Drives: Trapezoidal Screw vs. Ball Screw - GROB GmbH chevron_right

There are various types, including trapezoidal threads, ball screws, and acme threads. Each type has specific applications and characteristics.

Key factors include load, speed, precision, and environmental conditions. If load is more important to you, a trapezoidal screw might be suitable. If speed is crucial, a ball screw would be more advantageous. The choice depends on the specific requirements of your application.

Higher efficiency, higher speeds, precise theoretical calculation of service life

6m/min

The maximum speed of Trapezoidal Screw Drives is limited by the sliding velocity. If this is too high, the lubricating film tears off.

Both types of threads have their merits. Generally, Ball Screws are used for fast and precise linear movements. Trapezoidal Screws are employed when the focus is solely on adjustment or if the operation is more rugged.

In the case of the traveling nut version, only the nut connection dimensions change. In the basic version with the Ball Screw spindle, it may occur that the bearing cover is raised to accommodate the Ball Screw nut in the gearbox.

Screw Drives require regular lubrication to minimize wear. The type of lubricant and the intervals depend on the operating conditions.

Yes, threaded spindles can also be equipped in stainless steel.
